Delta Dental has pledged money to help fund a new dental college in New England.

Northeast Delta Dental has pledged 2.3 million dollars to help the University of New England to build a new dental college. The university announced that it has received the money to put plans for a new College of Dental Medicine yesterday.

The University of New England will open Maine’s first dental college, a step which will help to confront problems of access to affordable dental care in the region. Maine is currently one of the worst states in terms of dental provision; all 16 counties suffer from a shortage of dental staff and consequently, patients are not getting the treatment they need. The university will also encourage more trained professionals to come to the area, as well as encouraging its own students to work at the facility. The aims of the college are shared by Delta Dental and this is why they were keen to support the programme, according to the company’s president, Tom Raffio.

Mr Raffio said that there was a great deal of public concern over access to reduced rate dental care in the area; uninsured patients and those with  a low income are struggling to access affordable care. The new facility will help to ease the problems and enable patients to benefit from local dental healthcare services.

Harley Knowles, from the University of New England, said the university was extremely grateful for the support of Delta Dental and expressed his excitement at the new plans.
