Children from Deeplish Playscheme were given a lesson in dental hygiene on the 11th August. The children were visited by Idrees Khan, who works for the NHS and travels around schools, nurseries and play centres educating children about oral hygiene and the importance of taking care of their teeth.

Mr Khan said that he always enjoys meeting the children and the summer playschemes are great fun. He also takes educational sessions for adults and the aim of the initiative is to provide children with the information they need to take positive steps to protect their teeth and gums from oral diseases and enjoy a healthy and happy smile.

Mr Khan’s sessions are designed to be fun as well as informative and he uses a variety of teaching techniques to highlight the main messages. He also uses practical demonstrations to show children how to brush carefully.

Volunteer coordinators Rabia Sultana and Bilal Ali said that it was a great pleasure to see children taking part in an array of activities and educational sessions, classes and workshops. The oral health talk will help children care for their teeth and reduce the risk of decay and gum disease.

The Deeplish Community Centre offers a number of schemes for children, which are funded by RADPAC.
