A dentist, who was found guilty of conning the NHS out of more than a million pounds, has been struck off by the General Dental Council.

Fifty one year old Joyce Trail, from Sutton Coldfield, was jailed after being found guilty of fraudulently claiming around £1.3 million from the NHS; investigations revealed that she made more than 100 false claims for patients who had died, in addition to triple claims for some patients; in total, the court heard that she had submitted more than 7,000 fraudulent claims.

Trail was sentenced to spend six and a half years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court last October and her actions have now been condemned by the General Dental Council. A spokesman for the body said that Trail’s actions “offended fundamental standards of behaviour expected of a member of the dental profession.”

The spokesman added that Trail’s actions highlight the flaws in her character and are “incapable of remedy” as she has “brought the profession into disrepute.”

Last year, the court heard that Trail had falsely claimed £1,376,423 from the NHS by submitting claims for treatments she had not completed and claiming for dead patients. It is believed that she spent the money on shopping, lavish holidays, a luxurious lifestyle and putting her grandchildren through private school.
