Dawlish Man Facing Jail for Practising Illegal Dentistry

A man from Dawlish, Devonshire, is facing a prison sentence after pleading guilty to practising illegal dentistry.

Stephen Sickelmore pleaded guilty to three charges after investigations were carried out by Devon County Council’s Trading Standards Service and the General Dental Council. Sickelmore pleaded guilty to providing poorly manufactured dentures, supplying dentures illegally and failing to deal with complaints.

Mr Sickelmore appeared in Exeter Crown Court yesterday and it was revealed that he had been supplying and fitting dentures illegally at his home on Old Gatehouse Road, trading under the brand name The Denture Clinic and charged patients between £500 and £1200 for treatment.

The court heard details of how Sickelmore ignored complaints from patients about poorly fitting dentures and manufactured dentures in his laundry room at home. Devon County Council worked closely with the General Dental Council and The Medical & Healthcare Regulatory Agency to prove that Mr Sickelmore was practising illegally.

In court yesterday, Judge Graham Cottle advised Sickelmore to prepare himself for a jail sentence. Patients can check their dentist is registered with the General Dental Council by visiting the GDC website.
