Darlington Youngsters get a Visit from the Dentist

Youngsters in Darlington were treated to a visit from the dentist last week as part of National Smile Month.

Tots from Borough Road Nursery School learned all about how to brush their teeth and make healthy food choices thanks to a visit from local dentist Helen Holguin. Helen, from Victoria Dental Practice, took along some props and treated the children to a fun, interactive session that involved dressing up as dentists and pretending to examine each other’s mouths.

Helen’s visit to the nursery was part of National Smile Month, a national campaign run by the Oral Health Foundation. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health and teach people how to keep dental disease at bay.

The children, who were aged between 3 and 5 years old, learned how to clean their teeth and Helen also spoke to them about what happens when you go to the dentist. The aims of the session were to teach the children that there’s nothing to be worried about when they have a dental check-up and to educate them on how to look after their teeth and gums.

Nursery headteacher Julia Thompson said it’s important the children feel confident when they go to the dentist and have the skills and knowledge to take good care of their teeth. Helen’s session was very helpful, but it was also great fun and the children had a wonderful time.
