In an interview with a woman’s magazine, dermatologist Debbie Palmer suggested that going to the dentist on a regular basis can help to prevent the formation of wrinkles. Palmer explained that skipping dental visits may increase the risk of bone loss in the jaw and cheeks. If the bone tissue lacks density, the level of support for the skin is reduced and this can cause lines to develop and the skin to sag. You may find that wrinkles develop around the mouth and nose and underneath the eyes.

The advice from dentists is to attend a check-up every 6-12 months. Many people avoid going to the dentist because they’re worried about needing treatment or fear what’s going to happen. However, people may be more open to the idea of regular appointments if they know that it can help to slow the ageing process.

If you are an anxious patient, try and face your fears and talk to your dentist about it. The sooner you take those crucial first steps, the better.
