A dentist from Bourton in the Cotswolds has been selected to be part of a team of field dentists in charge of caring for athletes’ oral health at the Commonwealth Games.

Dr Ian Speechley will be based at Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow from the 23rd July along with other volunteer dentists, nurses and doctors.

Dr Speechley successfully navigated a rigorous interview and application process and is delighted to be joining the team. He said that he is excited about the challenge and is honoured to be part of a legacy, which will be associated with Glasgow for many years to come.

During the games the Bourton dentist will be responsible for providing urgent treatment and pain relief for competitors who suffer dental injuries while participating in sports including judo, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing and netball.

Dr Speechley, who is principal dentist at Riverside Dental Practice, said that opportunity offers a chance to combine a love of sport with his everyday job and he is looking forward to encountering different dental challenges and scenarios. Dr Speechley previously volunteered at the London Olympic Games and Paralympics in 2012 and he is particularly excited about watching and being on hand to treat athletes taking part in the boxing competition in Glasgow.
