Computer Games for Dental Students

All work and no play isn’t a problem anymore – a new simulation game has been introduced, soon to be worldwide, to aid dental students with dental implant procedures.
The Virtual Dental Implant Simulation Programme has been designed by the Medical College of Georgia, School of Dentistry. The game is designed to assist students in decision making, improving diagnostic skills, patient comfort and various treatment protocols.
As the need for dental implant procedures increase with the aging population the Simulation Programme couldn’t have come at a better time. The programme enhances the knowledge of dental implant procedures in the depth of 3D, using gaming technology to focus on skills and patient comfort in a fun learning environment that would otherwise be hard to learn in the classroom.
Providers that also use the game are predicted to have more successful outcomes in their dental implant procedures. The game also provides multiple patients and scenarios to give even qualified practitioners more interactive experiences.
Patients on the game have unique personalities; students must examine virtual patients and use a patient’s medical history to decide on the correct treatment. The simulation then takes students through to a virtual clinical treatment area, where students must decide on the rest of the procedure themselves.
Dr. Cibrika, the programme’s project director, commented that: “[the game] is realistic. If the student doesn’t place anaesthesia in the right spot, the patient screams.”
The game can be used at anytime and anywhere, without the confines of walls, clinics and classrooms as an aid to clinical training, not replacing it.
