Community members to meet with dental officials to discuss services in Nairn

Members of the community are set to meet with dental officials to discuss the provision of dental care in Nairn. Following repeated calls for discussions to take place over the last few months, a meeting has now been scheduled for June.

Residents have raised concerns over a lack of access to NHS dental care in the area, and members of the community have been asking for a meeting to go through options and ideas since the beginning of the year. Now, they will have the opportunity to meet with the clinical dental director at NHS Highland, John Lyon, to discuss their worries and talk about the future of local dental services.

Residents asked questions of health authorities when a number of patients were told that they would be transferred from the dental unit at Nairn Hospital to private dental clinics. The move was part of a developing government policy, which is designed to relocate dental services to general dental clinics. The policy, which was unveiled a couple of years ago, has been widely criticised, as it has led to many being forced to see a private dentist. Although services are prioritised for those with complex and additional needs, many have been left without access to NHS services.

In response to concerns raised by local residents, Mr Lyon sent out a letter ensuring the chairman of Nairn West and Suburban Community Council, Dick Youngson, that extra places had been made available at the town’s Glen Ridding practice. Mr Lyon also stated that the Nairn facility was available to lease, but no suitable applicants had come forward.
