Officials have confirmed that a common entrance test will be used for dental students, as well as medical students, in India.

Dr Dibyendu Mazumdar, President of the Dental Council of India, has confirmed that the common entrance exam will now be used for admission to dental schools.

The National Eligibility Entrance Test had already been introduced by medical schools and colleges have now confirmed that dental students will take the same test in order to get into dental colleges across the country.

Dr Mazumdar made the announcement at a three-day national conference in Ahmedabad. The Indian Society of Periodontology conference was hosted by the Ahmedabad Dental College and Hospital.

The president of the DCI said that there was uncertainty when the common entrance test was brought in, as people were unaware whether the test would apply to medical students and dental students but the council met with the Medical Council of India and it was decided that it would be better if both sets of students took the same exam.

The president also confirmed that dental students will complete a one year internship as part of their course, to allow them to develop clinical and communication skills.
