Committee Campaigning for Dental Expert in Leicestershire

The Leicestershire Dental Public Health Committee is campaigning for a dental health expert to be employed in the region, following the publication of alarming statistics.

The committee has called for NHS Leicestershire to employ a dental public health consultant after figures showed that 45.3% of children under the age of 12 had decay, in comparison to the national average of just 17.5%.

In a statement, NHS Leicestershire said that a number of public health consultants are currently working in the area to improve standards of oral health and the trust has already invested more than 2 million pounds in NHS dental services in Leicester. In the last two years 6,000 new dental places have been created and free dental care is available for all children under the age of 18.

Zuffar Haq, chair of the Leicester Parents panel, is supporting the committee in their plea for a new public health consultant and added that there is obviously a problem in the area, as rates of decay are so high. There are enough dentists working in the city but an additional specialist would help to improve standards of oral health as services could be targeted to specific areas or age groups.

The oral health survey was conducted by North West Public Health Observatory and The Dental Observatory.
