Cockermouth dental practice to sponsor a nursery class in The Gambia

The owner of a dental practice in Cockermouth, Cumbria, has agreed to sponsor a nursery classroom in The Gambia.

Paul Rowlands, from Derwent Dental Care, decided to pledge financial support to the venture after meeting the founders of the Siiboo charity, Sharon and Colin Fox. The Egremont couple established the charity two years ago after a holiday in the African country. Colin said that there was a clear need for help, and they believed it was the right thing to do. The nursery they visited is in disrepair and it survives on very little funding. Supplies are limited, and there is no electricity or running water.

The nursery is currently facing an uncertain future, and the only reason it is still operating is the dedication of the staff and supporters like Sharon and Colin.

To help fund the nursery, Colin and Sharon have launched an appeal to offer sponsorship to local businesses and individuals. Individuals can sponsor a chair for £5 per month, and businesses can sponsor a classroom for £59 per month. So far, 29 chairs have been sponsored, and Derwent Dental Care is the first business to lend its support to a classroom.

Rose Rowlands, co-owner of the practice, said that her and Paul were inspired by the efforts of the Fox’s, and they wanted to help out. She described Colin and Sharon as “inspirational”, and said that the work that they are doing is making a difference to people who have very little. As parents, Paul and Rose understand the importance of education, and they are looking forward to being part of the venture.

Siiboo has also launched a campaign to provide shoes for children, with the practice agreeing to be a drop-off point for the Big Little Shoe Appeal.
