Scotland’s largest dental provider, Clyde Munro is hoping to ease staff shortages with a new programme for trainee dental nurses.

The Strive Programme launched at the end of 2021. The primary aim is to introduce trainees to the basics of the profession and provide opportunities to gain qualifications and secure employment after training.

The scheme launched as figures suggested that the number of dental nurses working in Scotland is falling. Over 300 dental nurses have left the register since the scheme started.

Once the trainee nurses have completed the programme, they will have the opportunity to continue their professional development with access to other courses. They will also go through a formal graduation process and Clyde Munro advisers will be available to offer information and advice about pursuing a career with the group.

Clyde Munro is working with dental nursing training provider, Ident. A second course will launch in April. Head of HR at Clyde Munro, Nicola Logan, said that it was fantastic to get the training programme underway.

She described the scheme as “a crucial step to addressing the shortage in qualified nurses while supporting dental nurses through training.” Dental nurses play a critical role and dentists cannot work without them.

So far, 20 trainee dental nurses have enrolled in the 12-month course. The Glasgow-based group is hoping to expand in the months and years ahead with a new programme launching in April and plans to build on the existing initiative.
