Clyde Football Club has announced that it will be sponsoring this year’s Mouth Action Month campaign.

The Scottish Third Division club has announced that it will support Mouth Action Month throughout the 2011/2012 season. Throughout the season, the players will wear the British Dental Health Foundation’s Blue Ribbon logo on their shirts to raise awareness of oral cancer.

Mouth Action Month will take place in November and a series of events will take place to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a disease which kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer together.

This year’s campaign will be accompanied by the tagline, ‘If in doubt, get checked out’ to encourage people to visit their dentist on a regular basis and attend oral cancer screenings, which will be carried out free of charge across the UK.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that it was a great honour to have Clyde FC on board for the campaign; rates of oral cancer are higher in Scotland than other parts of the UK and it is hoped that having the support of Clyde FC will help to encourage Scottish people to attend screening programmes and look out for signs and symptoms of mouth cancer.

Oral cancer has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with rates increasing at an alarming rate amongst young people. Risk factors including alcohol, smoking, a poor diet and exposure to HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) have all been identified and dentists are eager for public awareness of the disease to be increased. Despite the growing number of cases, awareness of oral cancer is low and most people are unaware of the symptoms they need to look out for, including sores that take a long time to heal, abnormal lumps or swellings in the mouth or throat and red or white patches in the mouth.
