A group of Chinese volunteers is making a difference in Fiji; members of a medical delegation from the Guangdong Province are helping out at a hospital in Suva this week before heading home to China.

The assistant health minister, Veena Bhatnagar, officially launched the Free Dental Treatment Project at Suva’s CWM Hospital, on Thursday morning and the group of delegates from Guangdong Provisional Peoples Congress will be volunteering at the hospital as part of the project for the next four days before flying back to China.

Ms Bhatnagar said that dental diseases are rife all around the world and Fiji is no exception. Gum disease and decay are very common, mainly due to diet and poor access to dental care and health ministers and dentists are hoping that schemes such as the Free Dental Treatment Project will help to make a difference and improve standards of oral health in the near future.

Over the coming days, the Chinese volunteers will be meeting hundreds of Fijians in need of dental care and providing a range of basic dental treatments. Although access to dental treatment is improving in Fiji, rates of decay are increasing, especially among young people.
