Sample News Big

Pictures submitted by children in Wales have been chosen for the cover of the  British Dental Journal for the next six months.

More than 2,000 children sent in drawings or paintings as part of the Designed to Smile initiative, which aims to improve standards of oral health among children in Wales. Of the 2,000 applications, a dozen successful candidates were chosen and their art work will now appear on the cover of the British Dental Journal over the course of the next six months.

Winning images feature colourful toothbrushes, unhealthy sweet treats, the Tooth Fairy, giant teeth and a scene depicting a trip to the dentist. The message from children is to clean your teeth and keep an eye on what you eat.

The youngest winner was 3 year old Logan Gotshall from Cylch Meithrin Carw playgroup.

Designed to Smile is a national campaign, which was launched in response to worrying figures relating to children’s oral health. Statistics showed that rates of decay among 5 year old children in Wales were high and the Designed to Smile campaign aims to teach children and parents about oral hygiene and healthy eating. This then aims to improve standards of oral health and reduce the number of children affected by dental decay.

The initiative involves more than 78,000 children across Wales.
