Children’s Dental Project Underway in Northern Ireland

Sample News Big

A brand new dental project has been launched in Northern Ireland to try and reduce the prevalence of dental decay among children.

Recent research suggests that children in Northern Ireland have the worst oral health in the UK and dentists and public health experts are keen to stall rates of decay.

A research project will be carried out over the course of the next four years to evaluate tooth decay prevention and around 1,200 children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old have been selected to take part in the study.

Michael Donaldson, head of dental studies at the health board, said that tooth decay was a problem for children in Northern Ireland and the aim of the project was to try and prevent tooth decay. Donaldson blamed poor oral hygiene and diets that contain a lot of sugary foods and drinks for the increase in rates of decay and said that parents need greater support to ensure that they are able to encourage their children to adopt good brushing habits and make healthy food choices.
