Chichester Dentist Treats Dancing Bears in India

Paul Cassar, dentist at Grange Dental surgery, has recently travelled to India in a bid to treat a number of dancing bears.

Before training as a dentist Paul had a keen interest in wildlife, as he studied biology during his time at university. This led him to become a member of the International Animal Rescue (IAR), which is a charity that saves animals from suffering across the globe.

During his time in India Paul successfully treated 23 bears in just five days. He said that he tried to spend as much time with the bears as he could, sparing around five hours for each animal. He went on to say that the trip was very tiring, as each one lasts around 2 weeks but states that it was worthwhile and that he enjoyed helping the bears.

Unfortunately, dancing bears suffer a number of serious wounds, particularly to their teeth. In order for the bears to cooperate with trainers they have their teeth destroyed by hammers when they are small cubs, which ensure protection for their handlers. As a result of this, their tooth roots are inflamed causing infection and searing pain.

Paul finally said that it’s magical and uplifting knowing that he is able to treat helpless animals such as the bears. This was his eighth trip since 2003 in which he also provides invaluable advice to local vets in the area, so they can maintain the animals’ teeth when Paul and his team have left.
