A Chester based dentist is taking on Everest to raise money for a good cause.

Dr Mark Walsh, from Curzon Park, is currently on his mission to reach the top of the mountain in a bid to raise funds for the British Dental Association’s benevolent fund, which offers financial help and support for dentists and their relatives.

Dr Walsh attempted the challenge last year but didn’t quite make it to the top; he reached the second step on the Tibetan side of the mountain, at an altitude of 8,605 metres and was desperate to try and reach the summit, which stands at 8,850 metres, again this year. He will be joined by a team, which includes a 16 year old climber.

Dr Walsh is a keen climber; he reached his first giant summit in 2006 when he successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and he has since conquered peaks in North and South America. He has also completed triathlons and long distance cycle challenges to prepare for the Everest trek.

The Everest trek will last for 69 days and Dr Walsh said it his biggest challenge yet; he said that he will face many difficult days and nights and there is a risk of losing his life; however, he is well prepared for the challenge and the thought that his efforts will help other people will encourage him to complete the mission.
