A dentist from Chesham is preparing for a new challenge as he joins up with the rest of the Olympic dental team to provide dental care for athletes throughout the duration of the games, which are due to start on Friday.

Dr Kunal Dattani, owner of Chesham Dental Care, will be based at the Rowing and Canoe Sprint Village in Royal Holloway during the games. Dr Dattani said that he decided to apply for the position because he wanted to be part of an amazing experience and it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Dr Dattani is prepared for a busy few weeks, admitting that he expects to miss out on much of the Games because he will be occupied treating patients; it is estimated that up to 40 percent of the athletes will require dental treatment, with toothache the most common complaint. Dr Dattani said that it is important that athletes feel their best in order to perform to the best of their ability and therefore the dental and medical teams must work to treat and prevent symptoms, which could affect the athlete’s performance.

Dr Dattani said that it is slightly disappointing that Team GB will not be staying at the Olympic village but he is looking forward to seeing athletes from other countries and agrees that it is beneficial to give athletes space so that they can focus on their performance.
