Chernobyl Children Pay A Visit To The Dentist In Malvern

A Malvern dental team has been caring for a group of children visiting the UK from Chernobyl.

Due to high levels of radiation in the Chernobyl area, many of the children suffer from illnesses, including dental health problems, and charity projects, such as those organised by Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, help to provide them with medical and dental care.

For many of the kids visiting Beacon Dental Care, this was their first trip to the dentist and the team went of their way to ensure the experience was fun and enjoyable. Going to the dentist can be daunting at the best of times, but when you’re in a different country and you don’t speak the language, it can be particularly scary.

Principal dentist, Karen Sutton, explained that the children often have very bad dental health and many have suffered from dental pain without complaining for years on end. The team assesses the children and provides treatment to help them to feel more comfortable and reduce the risk of further problems. Karen said that the kids always have brilliant manners and they seem genuinely thrilled to be in the UK.

The charity organises accommodation with host families for trips of around 2-3 weeks and the children take part in a number of activities and get the chance to explore the country, as well as receiving healthcare.

Karen said that it was a pleasure to have the children at the surgery and everyone had great fun meeting them, chatting to them and showing them how to clean their teeth and keep their gums healthy. The practice put on games and activities and everyone had a great time.
