Chernobyl Children Benefit From Dental Care In The UK

A group of children from Chernobyl are visiting the UK. A group of eight children are currently staying with families in Westbury with the help of the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line charity.

Families in Westbury have been working with the charity to house children from Chernobyl for the last 18 years. During their stay in England they are treated to days out, health and dental care and eye care.

Money for the trip is donated by local businesses and gathered from fundraising events in the local area.

The trip gives 12 year old children from Borodyanka, which is 50 miles away from Chernobyl, a chance to breathe fresh air, eat fresh food and enjoy a break away. Doctors believe that even a short break from the radioactive surroundings of their hometown does the children the world of good and the local community welcomes the group with open arms every year.

Access to health and dental care at home is poor and children are given health and dental checks during their time in the UK. Children have been visiting Westbury Dental Care and Haine & Smith Opticians for several years and the trip gives them the chance to get much-needed dental and eye care.

Dental problems, including cavities and abscesses, are fairly common and dentists can provide treatment to help ease their pain.

Children are also looking forward to taking part in a host of activities during their stay, from arts and crafts to pizza making and visiting the local fire station for a tour.
