A dental practice in Cheltenham will be offering free mouth cancer screening on Tuesday 26th November.

Illume, in Queen’s Road, Cheltenham, is inviting members of the public to attend the screening session in support of the British Dental Health Foundation’s Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign, which will until the 30th November.

The practice will also be taking the opportunity to announce that it has become the first Cheltenham dental practice to become a member of the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme, a new initiative brought in by the Mouth Cancer Foundation to support and encourage dental practices offering mouth cancer screening across the country.

The message this year is loud and clear: of in doubt, get checked out, and dentists are hoping that free screening sessions will draw crowds through the door.

Although statistics show that mouth cancer has become more prevalent in Great Britain, many people are still unaware of the causes and also the symptoms, which means that most cases are not detected at an early stage. In the last ten years, the number of cases has almost doubled and experts predict that 60,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease in the next ten years. Another alarming statistic shows that survival rates from mouth cancer have barely improved and this is largely due to the fact that people are not being diagnosed early enough because they are not aware of the warning signs.
