Cedar Falls Dentist Gets a New Puppy “Assistant”

Sample News Big

A dental clinic in Cedar Falls, Iowa has gotten itself a special “assistant” to help patients brave dental phobia and nerves. Her name is Maya, and she is a chocolate-Labrador mix and is four months old.

She was rescued from a rescue home in Missouri and is currently training to be a therapy dog. Currently though she has been at the clinic for a fortnight and it is hoped that in the future she will come and sit with patients, and help settle their fears, if the patient asks for her.

Currently though she has to settle with roaming in the office of Aaron Brummer, chief executive officer of Cedar Valley Dental Associates, a dental clinic with the somewhat stark motto of “We Cater to Cowards”.

Maya’s already become a hit with patients, and even has her own Facebook and Instagram pages.

Brummer remembers the story of how his wife and he met Maya, saying that she was in a litter of six puppies but was left in Missouri out in the cold and malnourished, which was when they rescued her.

There are a few clinics who are trying novel approaches to help phobic patients face their fears and come to the dentist, from puppies to amusing film trailer-esque adverts, to video goggles and virtual reality. Maya is just the latest and fluffiest example.
