Dental patients in Saffron Walden are concerned about plans to relocate dental services from the town’s community hospital to Stansted.

Patients may face a 10-mile trip for treatment if plans to relocate services from Saffron Walden Community Hospital to Stansted Mountfitchet go ahead.

Patients in the area have been asked to give their feedback on proposals to move the Dental Suite to another site and several locals have already taken to social media sites such as Facebook to air their concerns. Mental health services and the endoscopy unit at the hospital have already been moved and people are worried about further closures.

Sharon Morris is just one of the many people who have raised concerns. She claims that no dental practices in the town is currently accepting NHS patients and fears that people will be forced to travel to see a dentist if the Dental Suite closes. There are also worries that the move will impact on the availability of services for Stansted residents.

Work is underway at Stansted Health Centre and the new facility will undoubtedly improve health services in Stansted. However, Saffron Walden residents worry that they will struggle to access local health services on their doorstep. Ms Morris said that people are seeing closures and fearing for the future, as the NHS has not shared any of the plans with residents.

Local councillor and Liberal Democrat candidate, Mike Hibbs, said that people are understandably worried about the future of the hospital and the NHS services it provides, and admitted that he was concerned about the possibility of closures in the town.
