A community group based in Cambridgeshire is set to launch a new care home dental service in the New Year.

Friends for Needs, a private support group, which operates across Fenland, is setting up a new service to provide dental care for those living in nursing and residential homes. The venture will make dental services more accessible for care home residents in the aftermath of a report released by the Care Quality Commission.

The report suggested that the majority of individuals living in nursing home and care home don’t have access to regular dental care services. Over 50% of care homes contacted by the CQC did not have an oral health plan in place and 47% of staff had never undertaken any form of training related to providing patients with dental care.

The new scheme launched by Friends for Needs will be based on a similar programme in Bedford, which has enjoyed great success. The mobile service will offer regular routine assessments and treatments, including extractions, fillings and dental hygiene. The group will also provide access to emergency dental care and denture repair services.

Friends for Needs’ home services will run in partnership with the Priors Green Dental Hive, and the group will be exhibiting at the Peterborough Biscuit Event to inform local people about the new service and how it could benefit them. The event will take place on the 5th February 2020.

More information about the service can be found at www.friendsforneeds.co.uk.
