Burton dentist calls for traffic light system for acidic fizzy drinks

Sample News Big

A dentist from Burton has launched a campaign to introduce a traffic light warning system related to the acidity of fizzy drinks.

Dr Sandra Ferreira, from Measham Dental, is calling for traffic light labelling to be made available on fizzy drinks and juices, so that people are able to see the pH level. Many people are aware of the sugar content of fizzy drinks, but they may not be familiar with the pH value. Acids are incredibly damaging to the teeth because they erode the enamel, the protective coating of the teeth.

Dr Ferreira has compiled a petition, which she plans to send to the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. She believes that adding traffic light warnings would raise awareness of the potential damage caused by drinking acidic drinks.

Dr Ferreira claims that many of her patients are completely unware of the damage they’re ding to their teeth when they drink juice or fizzy drinks. Even the diet versions are acidic, and this contributes to enamel erosion. When the enamel is thin and weak, there’s a much higher chance of cavities and dental infections. The traffic light system is proven to work and it makes it easy for people to see what they’re actually eating or drinking.
