Bullied girl receives Award

Teenager Eva Hulme, who throughout primary and secondary school endured taunts about her protruding teeth, has received the Against all Odds award. The award, which recognises how extensive orthodontic work can change lives for the better, was created by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS).

Miss Hulme had visited an orthodontist at an early age of three, as her dentists raised concerns about her protruding teeth and later needed a brace. Despite the efforts of her first brace, which she wore in 2001, Eva’s teeth still presented a problem; to the point where she couldn’t close her mouth. The problems only worsened for Eva, as her adult teeth protruded at an angle of forty-four degrees, eleven millimeters in front of her lower jaw.

Now, after extensive work from orthodontist Dr. Jonty Meisner Eva, she has got her confidence back, along with the national award. Dr. Meisner, who began treating Eva in 2005, said; ‘It was important not only to improve her appearance but also to reduce the risk of further trauma to her upper incisors, as her protrusion meant that she would often bang her teeth.’

Three years of innovative treatment followed their pairs first meeting, which eventually allowed Eva to wear a fixed brace. She also wore temporary anchorage devices to pull her teeth upwards, to stop them from hanging so far down from her lips. Dr. Meisner, who is the principal orthodontist at Lakeside Orthodontics in West Kirby, is to also be award a trophy at the British Orthodontic Society’s annual conference in Brighton.
