Bullied children turn to cosmetic surgery

Children who are bullied about their appearance are asking for cosmetic surgery, according to one of the foremost plastic surgeons in the UK.
Douglas McGeorge, head of the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, believes cosmetic surgery could have a positive impact for adolescents who suffer bullying due to the way they look.
He said: “Lots of kids may talk about it, but talking about cosmetic surgery is a long way from actually going and having it done yourself.”
Recent statistics show that 5 per cent of cosmetic surgeons had carried out surgery on around 15 youngsters.
Mr McGeorge does point out that such a life changing measure should only be undertaken after serious thought, and that cosmetic surgeons always considered patient self-confidence and body image before going ahead.
Such news, however, has caused anger from anti-bullying groups, who believe it is the bullies with the problem, not the children.
Liz Carnell, director of Bullying UK, said: “They should not have to change their appearance to stop bullying. A child does not need invasive surgery to tackle bullying.
“If this happened in the workplace there would be laws against them, schools need to take it far more seriously.”
Sarah Dyer, director of Beatbullying, was also indignant at the news. She asks: ‘Where are you going to draw the line?”
