A dental clinic in Brooklands, Manchester, is promoting Mouth Cancer Action Month by offering free oral cancer screening in November.

The team at Maple Road Dental Practice will be providing oral cancer checks free of charge in November to support the annual Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign. Dentists and nurses will also be sporting blue smiles and t-shirts on the 18th to raise awareness of this life-threatening form of cancer.

Every day in the UK, 18 new cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed, yet many people are still unaware of the causes and symptoms. Mouth Cancer Action Month, which is backed by the British Dental Health Foundation and the Mouth Cancer Foundation, runs throughout November and practices all over the country will be taking part in fundraising activities and events and offering free screening tests. Surveys show that 4 out of 5 people are unaware of the symptoms and signs of mouth cancer, and the campaign aims to educate and alert people to make sure that any potential warning signs are spotted and addressed as quickly as possible.

Ian Hunt, clinical director of the practice, said that it is incredibly important to support the campaign, as screening, which only takes a few minutes, could save lives. Survival rates have remained stagnant for many years, despite the increase in the number of cases of oral cancer in recent years and this is largely due to the fact that cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Screening helps to identify potential abnormalities at a very early stage and this means that patients can be treated before cancer spreads. Early diagnosis can improve survival chances by up to 90 percent.
