British forces in Gibraltar took part in a series of events to celebrate No Smoking Day yesterday; the day was organised by petty officer and dental hygienist Lynn McCartin.

Troops at the British Forces Devils Tower Camp attended educational sessions about smoking cessation and the implications of smoking; troops were also told about how much money they could save by giving up smoking, as this year’s theme is ‘Swap Fags for Swag’.

In addition to the informative sessions, Lynn McCartin also highlighted what kinds of services are available for anyone who wants to quit smoking; nicotine replacement methods, including patches and gum, are available at Devils Tower and emotional support and advice are also available.

After the informative sessions in the morning, the troops got active with an obstacle course, fag relay and crazy golf challenge.

Lynn McCartin also said that it was beneficial for troops to give up smoking any time, not just on No Smoking Day and support will be available at any time to help people give up.

Smoking is a major cause of cancer, strokes and heart disease, as well as oral health issues, such as gum disease and giving up smoking helps to reduce the risk of health complications, as well as saving people a huge amount of money; a 20-a-day smoker could save more than £2,000 over the course of a year by quitting smoking.
