A British dentist has been appointed the Vice President of the Canadian Dental Association. Alistair Nicoll, originally from the UK, will be appointed President-Elect of the association in 2014 following a year as Vice President and then President in 2015.

Alistair currently works in Elkford and is the only dentist in the town. He moved from the UK in 1989 and opened the Elkford Dental Centre shortly after he moved over with his wife and the couple quickly adapted to life in Canada. Alistair now lives in Fernie, but enjoys working in Elkford and is an active member of the community.

Dr Nicoll has said that he is very honoured to be appointed as Vice President. He said that his new role will give him the opportunity to speak and act on behalf of dentists all over Canada and to protect their interests and encourage good practice.

Alistair firmly believes that his rural background gives him the perfect grounding and knowledge to make him a good suitor to the role. He deals with cases as and when they come in and often has to make do with the facilities and equipment he has on hand, rather than relying on specialist facilities which are available in cities and larger towns. Alistair also stated that he is aware of the needs of other rural practitioners and believes that this is very important, as access to dental care in these areas is an issue.

Alistair is now preparing for many busy years ahead as he will be representing the association at home and abroad. However, he is determined to continue to cater for the needs of patients in Elkford.
