Britain’s first private dental school is set to open next year, it has been revealed.

The school, which will open in Leicester, will have 100 students per year on a 5 year course which will cost a total of £180,000. The school is being run as a dual venture between the Leicester Dental Teaching Academy and the University of Buckingham, the UK’s first private university.

Students accepted onto the course will be able to apply for loans up to £9,000 per year and the aim of the course is to give students better practical training. Students will start treating patients from day one to ensure that they have excellent practical skills and are familiar with the working environment by the time they graduate. The five hundred students at the college will treat around 400 patients per day.

It is expected that the course will interest UK and international students and dean of the school, Professor Stuart Morganstein, said that course will prepare “students for a lifetime career.”

Universities minister, David Willetts, welcomed the venture, which he believes will provide “spin-off economic benefits to suppliers, contractors and the local economy.”
