The University of Bristol’s Dental School will relocate to larger premises in 2023, it has been confirmed.

The school, which is currently located in the Dental Hospital in Lower Maudlin Street, will move to Trinity Quay in Avon Street after planning permission for the development was approved.

The new site is close to Temple Meads Station and a proposed new campus in Temple Quarter.

The move is required because the school has outgrown its current home. The development project will enable the university to increase the number of dental places by 25% and local residents will also be able to access free dental treatment provided by students under the supervision of qualified dentists.

The site will house a state of the art dental facility, which will cost around £27 million. The purpose-built school, which will span 7,300 square metres, will boast 119 dental chairs.

University representatives scoured the city for potential sites for the new dental school and consulted bodies, including University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Health Education England and Healthwatch Bristol, on the proposals.

The new school will enable the expansion of existing programmes, as well as the addition of new courses, including a Diploma in Dental Nursing.
