Brightlingsea Dentist Humbled by Recent Charity Trip to Morocco

A dentist from Brightlingsea said he was humbled by a recent charity trip to Morocco. Piers Lambert from Colne View Dental Surgery recently returned from a visit to the remote community of Kilea. He visited the area as part of a project run by the charity Dental Mavericks.

Piers was joined by a team of volunteers from the UK. During the day, the team worked incredibly hard to treat as many patients as possible at a temporary clinic in Kilea. This rural village is located in the Rif Mountains and access to dental care is very poor. Enduring freezing temperatures, Piers and his fellow volunteers saw more than 400 children in a single day.

Admitting that the experience was difficult, Piers said many of the children had extensive oral health problems and living conditions were far from ideal. Children were living in poverty and most came to the dentists with significant pain. During the day, the team pulled together to provide pain relief through extraction procedures. They also handed out toothbrush and toothpaste packs and offered preventative fluoride treatment.

Children waited in the cold to see the dentists and were very grateful for their help. Many had light clothing and sandals on, but they didn’t complain.

Piers volunteered for the trip after another volunteer dentists was forced to pull out just a month before. Having studied with Chris Branfield, a trustee of the charity, he was approached with the opportunity and decided to put his name down. Now, he plans to volunteer more frequently and is already thinking about fundraising ideas for his next trip.
