A dental team from Brighouse hit the streets last week to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

Dentists and dental nurses from Fresh Smile Dental Clinic completed a 10km walk to raise awareness of oral cancer in support of the Mouth Cancer Foundation; they travelled down from Brighouse to London to take part in the Mouth Cancer Awareness 10km Walk, which was organised by the charity as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

Nuzat Zaman, manager of the practice, said that mouth cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage, as people are unaware of the symptoms and they don’t notice the changes that are occurring in their mouth.

As a large proportion of people are unaware of the signs of mouth cancer, dentists have an important role to play in promoting early detection.

Dentists at the Brighouse practice decided to take part in the awareness walk to try and raise the profile of mouth cancer and educate people about the causes and risk factors and the early warning signs they should be looking out for; they also wanted to highlight the importance of regular dental check-ups.

The team raised a total of £1,018, which will be donated to the Mouth Cancer foundation.

Dr Joshi, founder of the charity, said that the popularity of the walk is growing every year and thanked Fresh Smile for their valuable contribution.
