Founder of dental charity, Bridge2Aid, Ian Wilson, appeared on BBC Breakfast last week to announce plans to expand charity work into Rwanda.

Bridge2Aid currently works in rural communities in Tanzania, training clinical officers to provide basic dental treatments and providing basic supplies. Volunteers will also visit health clinics and schools to provide routine dental treatments.

Ian Wilson, a dentist from Garforth, near Leeds, said that he was planning to visit Rwanda in the near future after receiving an invitation from the Ministry of Health. Dr Wilson will visit clinics set up by the Survivors Fund (SURF), a British organisation, which was established to support people affected by the Rwandan genocide in 1994. SURF also works in partnership with Project Umubano, which is run by the UK’s Conservative Party.

In the interview on BBC Breakfast, Dr Wilson said that he was exploring the possibility of expanding the charity’s work to Rwanda, a country that has very poor standards of oral care, with just 11 qualified dentists in the country.

Bridge2Aid has been helping some of the world’s poorest people in Tanzania for the last eight years and the charity organises trips on a regular basis and hundreds of dentists, nurses, hygienists and dental therapists have already volunteered their time and skills for the cause.
