The cosmetic surgery industry has had a "breakthrough" in its understanding of facial rejuvenation, it has been claimed.

A study published in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has revealed that a particular fat compartment located in the cheek is the key to a young-looking face.

The research stated that when injected with fillers, implants or fat, the compartment not only improves the appearance of the cheeks, but also the rest of the face.

According to the researchers, the nose, eyes and mouth areas all look more youthful and invigorated as a result.

"From the irresistible urge to pinch the cheeks of adorable infants to our admiration of Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn and Angelina Jolie, we’ve known for a long time that cheeks are vital to what we consider beautiful," remarked report co-author Joel Pessa.

According to the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, women most want cheeks like Keira Knightley, Cate Blanchett and Renee Zellweger.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18615170-ADNFCR
