A brave dentist from Bracknell is preparing to battle the soaring heat of the Sahara Desert to raise money for the Mouth Cancer Foundation. Bob To, from Blueberry Dental Surgery, will compete in the famous Marathon des Sables to support the cause.

One of the most gruelling endurance battles in the world, the Marathon des Sables is a week-long event, which covers 156 miles. Participants must complete the course carrying the equipment and food supplies they need for the week in a backpack.

Bob chose to support the Mouth Cancer Foundation to raise awareness of this deadly disease, which is becoming more common year on year. Over the last 14 years, Bob has detected 14 cases of mouth cancer, and he is keen to ensure that more people are diagnosed at an early stage in the future. Although mouth cancer kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined, public awareness is very low, and recent research revealed that only a third of people are aware of the main symptoms. These include swelling, slow-healing mouth ulcers, and red and white patches in the mouth.

Bob has been training for the desert challenge for 12 months. Despite the fact that he has experience in completing half marathons, Spartan challenges, and most recently the 66-mile Pilgrim Challenge, he believes that the Marathon des Sables will be by far his toughest challenge.

Bob is due to fly on to Morocco on the 5th April and anyone who wishes to donate is advised to visit www.justgiving.com/bob-to.
