An Australian dentist has held his nerve and successfully operated on Harare, a lion from Melbourne Zoo.

Dr Stephen Coles, a specialist dental vet, had to operate on the 180 kg lion after one of his teeth broke off at the gum and the root of the tooth became infected. The lion was unable to eat properly and needed surgery to have the tooth extracted.

Dr Coles said that the procedure to remove the tooth had gone well and he examined Harare and found him to be very healthy. It was essential to remove the tooth to prevent him from feeling pain and enable him to eat and chew properly.

Speaking during at interview after the procedure, Dr Coles joked that he made 100% sure that the lion was fully asleep before putting his hands inside the big cat’s mouth. Harare is now fighting fit and eating normally.
