Dental professionals across Bradford have joined forces with Bradford District Care Trust to launch a new initiative for National Smile Month.

Dental professionals have created an educational resource pack, which is designed to teach children about oral health and issues related to oral health, such as healthy eating and oral hygiene. The pack contains activities and fact sheets, as well as general information. The initiative has been launched as part of National Smile Month, a national campaign run by the British Dental Health Foundation, which ran until the 15th June.

There have been major improvements in oral healthcare over the last decade; however, figures show that rates of decay are highest in the Bradford area. A recent NHS oral health survey of 12 year olds found that rates of decay were much higher in Bradford than the national average. The survey also found that 52 percent of children in the Bradford district have tooth decay, compared to the national average of 33.4 percent.

Sharon Walker, deputy manager of the oral health promotion team at Bradford District Care Trust, said that it was important to teach children and adults about oral hygiene and ways to protect their teeth and gums. This year’s theme of the Smile Factor will hopefully teach children to associate good oral health with success and happiness and organisers have chosen the theme to encourage people to realise the varied benefits of having a healthy smile.
