Botox Set to be Available for Migraine Sufferers on the NHS

Botox will soon be available to NHS patients who suffer from recurrent and severe migraines.

Botox, an increasingly popular treatment that is available at beauty clinics and dental surgeries across the UK, is commonly associated with smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, but the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently approved the injection for the treatment of migraines and patients should be able to access the treatment on the NHS within months.

NICE estimates that the cost of Botox treatment will be around £350 per 12-week treatment cycle, which would equate to £1,400 per patient.

Dr Fayyaz Ahmed, chair of the British Association for the Study of Headaches, said that migraines are extremely common and can be debilitating for patients, especially those who suffer from frequent and severe migraines. Studies have shown that Botox can be a life-changing treatment, reducing the number of days people have to take off college, school or work and increasing their quality of life.

According to the Migraine Trust, migraines are one of the top 20 causes of disability in adults and affect more people than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined.
