Boston residents are invited to trade in their old toothbrushes for a new one at an event to celebrate National Smile Month today.

The Boston Health Shop will be offering new toothbrushes in exchange for old ones between 10am and 2pm today. The event was organised by the oral health promotion team, which is part of the Special Care Dental Service at Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust.

The Boston Health Shop, located in Strait Bargate, will be open for local people to come in and swap their old toothbrush for a new one and the oral health promotion team will also be on hand to offer advice about oral hygiene and reducing the risk of oral diseases.

Gina Hargrave, an oral health promoter at Lincolnshire Community Health Services, said that National Smile Month is a great opportunity for people to think about their oral hygiene regime and their oral health status. The toothbrush amnesty allows people to get a new toothbrush free of charge and all they need to do is pop into the Boston Health Shop while they are out shopping.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, the charity that runs the annual campaign, said that National Smile Month is a fun and accessible means of conveying messages about the importance of oral health. Dr Carter added that the three key messages were to brush twice a day, visit the dentist regularly and restrict the consumption of sugary and acidic foods and drinks, especially between mealtimes.
