Big Screen Star Cured of Dental Fear by Dentist

Jennifer Anniston, star of hit TV series Friends and the soon to be released film, Horrible Bosses (in which she plays a dentist) claims her dentist uses unorthodox methods to help anxious and fearful dental patients whenever they had an appointment.

The 42 year old star answered questions about her role in Horrible Bosses and her own experiences with dentists.

The star claimed her dentist of 15 years played the guitar while she was in the chair for teeth moulds. The news came during the interview with ok magazine to promote her new film in which she plays a dentist who sexually harasses her employees. “My dentist plays the guitar for me when I have moulds in my mouth, it’s odd but it’s the truth… And you can’t get out of the chair so you’re stuck listening to it. Not that it’s not good or anything by the way. Lovely.”

Fear of the dentist, also known as dental phobia is something that all dental practices are putting a huge amount of time and effort into in today’s dental world.  Guitar playing is a rather unorthodox method of calming anxious patients and we assume he was playing a calming acoustic song rather than some heavy metal guitar tunes (at least we hope!) but there’s no reason it wouldn’t help.

Some private dental surgeries now use distractive ways of helping dental phobia such as films mounted on the ceiling to give patients something to distract them.

Other dental practices use “laughing gas” to calm patients, as well as therapeutic CDs, or just the suggestion the patient brings in music of their own.

Whatever the method, all dentists are now aware of dental phobia and how common it is, and have been trained in ways of helping patients, if you feel you suffer from dental phobia, trying explaining your situation to your dentists and you will likely find them to be more than happy to talk you through the procedure beforehand.
