The former showgirl turned dental hygienist has defended Silvio Berlusconi’s decision to have her run for his party in Italy’s regional elections.

The Italian prime minister, 73, appointed 25-year-old Nicole Minetti after she helped him recover from an assault in which two of his teeth were broken at a Milan hospital.

Despite the fact that she no political experience, Minetti claimed that she would be a good representative for the People of Freedom party in Lombardy.

Minetti, who in the past has appeared on TV in a bikini, said that she had expected criticism but added that the controversy surrounding her appointment had been over exaggerated.

She also claimed that she was not worried because she had done her homework and feels qualified to represent the Lombardy region.

Adding that people should not judge her without seeing what she had to offer, Minetti called on newspapers to stop printing revealing photos of her as she had only posed for them to support herself while studying.

Berlusconi has received criticism from his own party and outsiders for his decision to appoint under-qualified yet beautiful women as members in his party.
