BDA calls for explanation over CQC fees

The British Dental Association has urged the Care Quality Commission to explain calculations related to a new fee scale for dental practice registration.

The plea has come in light of concerns being raised over the possibility of single owners being forced to subsidise owners of larger practices. The sliding scale system would mean that providers who own a large number of practices would pay a lower registration fee than those with a single practice, despite the CQC promising to link registration fees to the provider’s responsibility to fulfilling national practise guidelines.

The BDA has sent a letter to the Chief Executive of the CQC, Cynthia Bower, to ask for clarification over CQC registration fees. Susie Sanderson, chair of the BDA’s executive board, said that dental professionals across the UK had already raised concerns over the CQC’s management and regulation of dental services; recently, there has also been angry reaction to the new registration process, which is alleged to be longwinded and a waste of time and money.

Practice owners in England are outraged at the proposed registration fee of £1,500, as their colleagues in Wales pay under £100 for the same privilege. John Milne, chairman of the BDA, said the CQC must explain their calculations; he said dentists already had a lack of faith in the commission and the convoluted registration process was not helping matters.
