Basingstoke South West councillor, Stephen Reid, has voiced concerns over the future of a proposed new dental surgery after the plot that had been set aside was sold by developers.

Land at the Island Site in Beggarwood had been earmarked for a new dental surgery, a pub and a care home but there are now concerns about the plans after the plot was sold at auction. According to reports in the local press, the land, which covers 0.2 acres, was sold recently by Grainger plc for £365,000.

Mr Reid suggested that the move may scupper plans to create a new dental surgery, which was promised to local residents when the planning application was approved. Mr Reid said that he was “anxious” about the situation and added that he was aware that the land had been sold but had no further information about the proposals for the dental surgery.

The existing dental practice in Beggarwood is located next to the GP surgery. It was hoped that moving to a new facility would enable the GP practice to expand to provide services for more local people and to improve access to dental care in the area.

Cllr Reid confirmed that he had tried to contact the developer who sold the land and is now encouraging the new owner of the plot to contact him to discuss plans for the future.

The local population has grown significantly in recent years with the addition of new housing, and the demand for dental and GP services has subsequently increased. Cllr Reid is worried that if plans are thrown out, there will be a shortage of dental appointments and this means that patients will have to wait longer, travel further afield or pay for private treatment.
