Bangalore dentists go green

Dentists in Bangalore have vowed to try and promote eco-friendly dentistry.

A number of dentists are concentrating on turning their clinics into ‘green’ zones, by trying to eliminate waste, conserve energy and recycle paper and plastic.

Dr Asish Shetty, a professor at the Bangalore Institute of Dental Sciences, said that current practices are producing a great deal of waste and using too much energy and more needed to be done to contribute to the global effort to protect the environment. From now on, Dr Shetty said that a number of changes need to be made in order to promote green dentistry.

The new, environmentally friendly measures will involve several different aspects of dentistry. Dentists will be encouraged to conserve energy and water supplies, recycle waste and stop using chemicals which could potentially be harmful to the environment.

Dental clinics will now be kitted out with energy-saving measures such as CLF light bulbs and dental staff will make more effort to save water and electricity. Experts are also keen to stop the use of silver amalgam fillings, as the metal could potentially be harmful for the environment.

Dentists will also encourage their patients to start adopting green habits. This includes encouraging them to cut down on waste, save water by turning the tap off while they are brushing their teeth and saving electricity in their homes.
