Dentists working in Bangalore have appealed to parents to take care of their children’s teeth.

Dentists are worried about standards of oral health amongst the city’s children, as a large proportion of children have untreated dental decay and gum problems. Despite numerous warnings and campaigns, dentists feel that the message is not getting through to parents and children are not being educated about the importance of brushing their teeth.

Dentists in Bangalore feel that children have a lack of understanding about oral health and have not been taught how to look after their teeth and gums; consequently, the number of children suffering from decay is increasing each year and children are starting to lose teeth from a very early age.

Dentist, Dr Kiran Betadur, said that parents need to engage their children in oral hygiene as early as possible to enable them to adopt good habits. Dr Betadur said that many children in the city had decay because they did not brush their teeth on a regular basis and they consumed a diet filled with sticky and chewy foods.

Dr Arjun Das, a root canal specialist at Sagar Apollo Hospital, said that he has experienced an increase in the number of children with extensive dental decay. He encouraged parents to take responsibility for their children’s dental health until they were able to look after their own teeth. When children are very young, it is important for parents to clean their children’s teeth; however, as soon as they are able to do it themselves, parents should encourage this and establish teeth cleaning as part of their children’s daily routine.
