Australian Dental Association Issues Warning Over Oral Sex Link To Oral Cancer

The Australian Dental Association has issued a warning over the connection between oral sex and oral cancer.

Recently, Hollywood actor Michael Douglas remarked that he believed his throat cancer was caused by oral sex. Although his publicist was quick to remove the comments, dental experts believe that people should be aware of the link between oral sex and oral cancer.

Research has suggested that the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is a risk factor for cervical cancer in women, is also linked to oral cancer. This is one of the reasons that the number of cases of oral cancer has increased among young people in recent years.

Peter Aldritt, chair of the Australian Dental Association’s Oral Health Committee, warned the public that oral sex can increase the risk of oral cancer, which may contribute to premature tooth loss, health complications and even death.

Mr Aldritt said that oral sex is as harmful as drinking and smoking when it comes to oral hygiene and warned that people could be putting their health at risk as a result of their sexual behaviour. He estimated that around a quarter of cases of oral cancer in Australia are linked to oral sex.

Mr Aldritt’s warning came as Australia celebrates Dental Health Week.
